Child care and early education policies are shaped by a history of systemic and structural racism. This has created major racial disparities in children’s access to quality child care that meets their cultural and linguistic needs and enables their parents to work.1 The BEECS Project works to bring local awareness to these disparities.
The task at hand is of vital importance in bringing awareness to the many issues that our community residents face in trying to acquire the best possible education for their children
- FRENCHY DAVIS
"Black, Indigenous, and People of Color should not be asked to rest their hope on positive potential, but on equitable policies, principles, and practices." - Lawrence Garrett, Author of The Equity Starter Kit.
Did you know that the National Forum on Early Childhood Policy and Programs found that investment in early childhood programs yields a return of $4 to $9 per every $1 invested? Have you ever wondered why our communities aren't seeing these investment dollars? Without the
awareness of how this lack of investment hurts us, it's difficult to know what we all can do together to help.
We all benefit from building equity in early childhood systems. Enrolling a child in an early childhood development system opens opportunities for parents to advance their families. Let's help grow awareness of these issues in Nash & Edgecombe County with investments of time and action. Our children are worth it.
Step 1: Exploratory Planning
In our exploratory planning phase, we host focus groups to pose questions and get scenario responses from parents. We gather research from other like-minded organizations and we engage community leaders for advice and direction.
Step 2: Raise Awareness
We look to arm our community with knowledge based on facts and surveys. We promote our findings to the community through advertising, events, public relations, and promotion through word of mouth.
Step 3: Follow Through
Follow-through is essential. We look to help the community take ownership in the solutions. We create portals of access to information and resources that will help us build equity in early childhood systems.
To accomplish our goal of building equity in early childhood systems for Nash and Edgecombe County it will take our network from across the state to bring about the local impact that we seek. While our local lawmakers may support this effort it takes the community to get behind them to help make a change at the state level.
A special thank you to the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust for providing a grant in the form of $330K over a three year period to help us bring awareness to the community.
Frenchy Davis and Nancy Rogers lead the BEECS Project and its effort to build equity in early childhood systems in Nash County and Edgecombe County.
